The Bold Seagulls Redefining Urban Wildlife in Magadan
Magadan, Russia

In the far eastern port city of Magadan, residents have developed an unusual relationship with the local seagull population. Rather than keeping their distance, these coastal birds have learned to treat apartment windowsills as regular dining stops, showing a surprising level of comfort around human dwellings.

A seagull stands on a windowsill, looking into a room. The seagull is white with gray wings and a yellow beak. It is facing the camera and appears to be looking directly at it. In the foreground, there is a bottle with a red ribbon tied around its neck. The bottle is partially filled with what appears to be birdseed. In the background, through the window, there is a street with cars and buildings. The video is shot from a low angle, looking up at the seagull. The room appears to be a living room or bedroom, with wooden floors and blinds on the window.

The interactions are remarkably direct. Gulls routinely land on metal sills, peering through the glass to catch the attention of those inside. Some residents leave out small dishes of fish scraps or seeds, occasionally even hand-feeding the birds. The boldest of these feathered visitors have been known to step right past the window frame, landing on household objects like record players to claim their treats.

A person wearing a black glove is holding a piece of food out to a seagull perched on a windowsill. The seagull is looking at the food with its beak slightly open. A bottle with a red ribbon is on the windowsill behind the food. The background shows a street with trees and buildings.

This behavior highlights the adaptability of urban wildlife in harsh environments. Magadan’s cold climate and coastal geography mean that food sources can vary, driving these intelligent birds to seek out reliable alternatives. Over time, what began as opportunistic scavenging has turned into a daily routine of mutual curiosity.

A seagull stands on a windowsill, looking at the camera. The seagull then opens its mouth and lets out a squawk. The seagull then turns its head and looks away from the camera. The seagull then flaps its wings. The seagull then looks back at the camera. The seagull then walks across the windowsill. The seagull then flies away.

While urban gulls in many parts of the world are often viewed as pests, here they are met with a sense of quiet fascination. The daily visits offer a small, unexpected connection to the wild marine landscape just beyond the city limits, proving that even in the most industrial settings, nature finds a way to move in.

A seagull lands on the dust cover of a turntable and pecks at food in a small dish on the turntable platter. The turntable is positioned on a windowsill. The food appears to be fish scraps.
