This image, captured in Maranura, Peru, displays a diverse congregation of butterflies resting on a rocky ground surface. The ground is composed of various light grey and brown pebbles and small stones, interspersed with scattered small green plant leaves and dry botanical debris. No human subjects are present. A minimum of ten individual butterflies are visible across the frame. The most prominent species features black wings with vibrant orange bands; at least six individuals of this type are observed, with wings either fully open or partially closed. One such butterfly is centered in the lower half of the image with fully extended wings. In the mid-right, a butterfly with closed wings exhibits a light brown coloration with a distinct white diagonal stripe across its forewing and darker markings. Adjacent to it, a butterfly is partially visible, displaying brilliant iridescent blue and black on its visible wing with a prominent red marking near its body, and a dark brown forewing with white spots. Additionally, several smaller dark brown butterflies are scattered throughout the scene, some with subtle patterns, and one smaller mottled orange-brown butterfly is positioned in the upper left quadrant. The butterflies appear to be static, suggesting a collective puddling behavior to extract nutrients from the ground.
