This image displays the monumental Piccolomini Altar, located in the Siena Cathedral (Duomo di Siena) in Siena, Italy. The structure is an elaborate, multi-tiered marble sculpture, predominantly white with visible gray veining, extending vertically and flanked by the cathedral's distinctive black and white striped columns and walls. The altar features a large central arched recess with a deeply carved, shell-patterned semi-dome. Above this arch, an inscription reads "FRAN PICCOLOM CAR SENEN PII II PONT MAX NEPOS." Numerous marble figures and relief panels are integrated into the architecture. On the lowest tier, flanking the central recess, stand two male statues in niches: the figure on the left holds an unidentifiable object, and the figure on the right holds a book. Below these statues are carved coats of arms. Higher on the structure, two additional male figures occupy niches, one on each side. At the apex of the altar, a central statue depicts the Madonna and Child. Various smaller relief sculptures are distributed across different architectural elements. At the base of the central arch, a smaller altar surface supports a rectangular painting, enclosed in a gold frame, portraying the Madonna and Child. A red velvet rope barrier, supported by metallic stanchions, delineates the area in front of the altar. The overhead ceiling is a dark, intricately painted vaulted structure.
