The image depicts the Sher-Dor Madrasah, located in Registan Square, Samarkand City, Uzbekistan
The image depicts the Sher-Dor Madrasah, located in Registan Square, Samarkand City, Uzbekistan. The building is a large, two-story historical structure with a prominent central pointed iwan (arched portal) flanked by two tall, cylindrical minarets. The entire facade is covered with intricate mosaic tilework in blue, white, gold, and brown tones, displaying geometric patterns, Arabic calligraphy, and floral motifs. Above the main arch of the iwan, two distinctive mosaic panels illustrate anthropomorphic tigers/lions with sun faces on their backs, pursuing white deer. Two ribbed, turquoise-colored domes are visible behind the main facade structure. The madrasah rests on a raised base of light-colored stone or marble, with steps leading to its multiple arched entrances. In the foreground, a large, open plaza paved with reddish-brown rectangular stones extends before the madrasah. Approximately ten to twelve adult individuals are present in this paved area, standing in small groups or individually. They are dressed in casual clothing, including t-shirts, shorts, and light dresses. Some individuals are engaged in conversation, while others appear to be observing the building. One person on the far right is captured with an arm raised. The sky above is a light, clear blue, occupying the upper half of the image. Green foliage is partially visible to the far left and right, behind the madrasah.
