In Lobacheve, Ukraine, a patch of cracked asphalt is the setting for a small plant with succulent green leaves and two bright red flowers. The plant grows defiantly from a fissure in the rough, grey surface, surrounded by scattered stones and darker patches of the pavement. One flower is in full bloom, its petals spread wide, revealing a yellow center. The second flower, slightly lower and to the left, is also open, its petals a vibrant contrast to the dullness of the surrounding asphalt. A smaller cluster of the same plant, with its characteristic needle-like leaves, grows to the left of the main subject. The environment suggests an urban or roadside location where nature is finding a way to thrive amidst man-made structures.
