Twelve black and white artworks by Henri Matisse are displayed in a three-row by four-column grid on a plain white wall at the Musée Matisse in Nice, France
Twelve black and white artworks by Henri Matisse are displayed in a three-row by four-column grid on a plain white wall at the Musée Matisse in Nice, France. The collection is titled "Sujets photographiques. Rodolphe dans la forêt (Le Dormeur)," created between 1935 and 1945, and was a donation from the artist. The top four images and the first image of the middle row are unframed and depict a solitary figure, possibly "Rodolphe," crouching or resting within a stylized forest environment characterized by tall trees and large, simplified leaves. A distinct image in the middle row, far left, dated "2-9-56," shows two simplified figures near a body of water with abstract, swirling forms above. The remaining seven artworks, comprising the last three of the middle row and all four of the bottom row, are enclosed within a consistent decorative border. These framed works depict a figure in a state of repose or sleep, partially obscured and embraced by dense, dark, tropical-looking foliage, such as ferns, set against a background of vertical tree trunks. The overall display suggests a series of studies or prints related to the central theme of a sleeping figure in a forest.
