The image displays a wide, dark, and heavily polluted urban waterway, consistent with a canal or drainage channel within an informal settlement area of Lagos, Nigeria. The water surface, occupying the center and left of the frame, is murky and reflects a hazy sky and structures on the far bank. It is extensively covered with floating debris, particularly along the near bank, consisting of numerous plastic bags, bottles, and general refuse. The foreground and right side show the near bank, densely overgrown with green grasses and broad-leafed vegetation. This vegetation emerges from and is interspersed with substantial accumulations of solid waste, including white, clear, and black plastic bags, wrappers, and various discarded items. A distinct yellow, red, and white cigarette pack is visible on the ground in the bottom right corner. On the far bank, a continuous line of informal, single-story structures stretches across the upper portion of the image. These dwellings appear constructed from diverse materials such as light-colored wooden planks, corrugated metal sheets, and possibly painted concrete, topped with corrugated metal roofs. Their reflections are visible in the water. Further in the background, more urban development and outlines of vehicles are discernible. No people are visible in the scene. The primary observed activity is the widespread accumulation and disposal of solid waste into and adjacent to the waterway.
