The image displays the lavish interior of the Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore, located in Rome, Italy. The perspective is from a slightly elevated position, looking towards the high altar and apse.

In the foreground, a marble balustrade with green and white panels separates the viewing area from the main sanctuary. Steps descend from this balustrade.

The central feature is a massive, ornate baldachin (ciborium) supported by four dark reddish-purple columns, each intricately wrapped with spiraling golden leaf motifs. The baldachin's lower structure is adorned with dark green panels and numerous gold sculptural figures, possibly caryatids or angels. A golden papal tiara and crossed keys emblem are visible at the apex of the baldachin.

Beneath the baldachin stands the high altar, covered with a white cloth and decorated with multiple golden candelabras holding three unlit white candles. The altar is flanked by elaborate arrangements of yellow and white flowers and various green plants. A golden angel statue on a pedestal is visible to the right of the altar.

The semi-domed apse behind the baldachin is covered in a brilliant gold mosaic depicting Christ and the Virgin Mary enthroned, holding books, surrounded by numerous angelic and saintly figures. Below this central medallion are multiple registers of smaller figures. Above the apse, the triumphal arch features earlier mosaics illustrating scenes from the life of Christ and Mary, including the Annunciation, Nativity, Adoration of the Magi, and the Massacre of the Innocents, set within architectural frames.

The flat ceiling throughout the basilica is a magnificent gold-coffered design, featuring intricate geometric patterns, rosettes, and various gilded emblems.

On the left wall, a large framed oil painting depicts a multi-figure biblical scene, possibly "The Last Supper" or a similar gathering, with several individuals seated around a table. Below this painting, a golden chair and a wooden lectern are visible. The walls exhibit a combination of marble paneling, framed artworks, and additional mosaics in various sections. Arched windows with grilles are visible on the right side, admitting natural light into the space. No human figures are present in the immediate scene.
