An exterior, slightly low-angle view depicts the monumental white marble facade of the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola on Janiculum Hill, Rome, Italy, under an overcast, twilight sky. The Baroque fountain, illuminated by artificial yellowish light from below, dominates the frame. The upper section features a large attic story inscribed with "PAVLUS QVINTUS PONTIFEX MAXIMUS" and further Latin text. Above this, a central curved pediment displays a coat of arms flanked by two carved figures, topped by a Latin cross. Two sculpted eagles perch on either side of the pediment, while two smaller sculpted dragons are positioned on the architectural elements below. A secondary inscription, "ANNO DOMINI MDCXII PONTIFICATUS SVI SEPTIMO," spans the structure beneath the attic story. The main body of the fountain consists of five large arches, separated by dark fluted columns with Corinthian capitals. The three central arches open into dark recesses, suggesting depth. The leftmost arch contains a window from which interior light emanates. In the lower foreground, a single adult male, dressed in a dark jacket, stands facing left, positioned slightly right of the center, partially silhouetted against the illuminated fountain base. The ground and immediate foreground are not clearly visible.
