An upward-angled view captures an ornate architectural facade, identified as a portal of the Basilica di San Marco in Venice, Italy. The central feature is a large, semicircular lunette mosaic set against a predominantly gold background. The mosaic depicts a complex narrative scene with numerous figures. In the upper-center, a detailed representation of a multi-domed Byzantine-style building, resembling the basilica itself, is visible. Below and around this structure, groups of robed human figures are arranged in a procession or gathering. Figures on the far right carry a rectangular object, possibly a sarcophagus or reliquary, while other figures on the left and center engage in various interactions, some holding staffs. The figures wear garments in shades of green, blue, red, brown, and white. A partial Latin inscription borders the top curve of the mosaic. Below the mosaic, an elaborate architrave features intricate, intertwining relief carvings, partially gilded. Centered above the inner arch of this architrave is a small, light-colored stone sculpture of a seated figure. The inner arch contains a panel of mottled greenish stone, into which circular bas-reliefs are carved. These reliefs depict figures and animals, including a figure on horseback, a bull, and figures reading or writing. Below these reliefs, a series of arched windows or panels with intricate geometric lattice-work carving are visible. To the right of the archway, two fluted marble columns with ornate Corinthian-style capitals provide structural support. The entire structure is composed of various light-colored marbles, including white and grey streaked varieties for the upper arches. Strong, natural light illuminates the scene, enhancing the reflectivity of the gold mosaic tesserae.
