A natural scene depicts a rocky mountain stream flowing through a deciduous forest on the lower slopes of Vitosha Mountain, near Sofia, Bulgaria. The stream dominates the central and lower portions of the image, coursing downhill from the upper right towards the lower left. Its bed is extensively covered with grey boulders and smaller rocks of varying sizes, many partially covered with green moss. Clear water cascades over and around these obstacles, creating numerous small rapids and localized waterfalls. Scattered brown fallen leaves, twigs, and small branches are visible both in the water and accumulated on the stream banks and forest floor. The forest on either side of the stream consists primarily of tall, slender deciduous trees, largely bare of foliage, suggesting late autumn or early spring. Sunlight filters through the upper canopy, casting dappled light onto the stream and the leaf-littered ground, which slopes upward into the forest. No human subjects, animals, or man-made structures are present.
