A grand marble cenotaph dedicated to Dante Alighieri is depicted indoors, likely in a church or hall in Florence, Italy, characterized by an arched ceiling. The monument features a central sarcophagus-like structure flanked by allegorical figures. One female figure, draped in classical robes, rests her head on the sarcophagus in mourning, holding a book and a laurel wreath. Another crowned female figure, also in classical attire, extends her arm upwards towards the sarcophagus. A third, partially visible male figure, possibly representing Dante, is seated behind the sarcophagus. The central inscription on the sarcophagus identifies the monument's subject as "DANTI ALIGHERIO TYSCI" (Dante Alighieri, the Tuscan) and states it is an "HONORARIVM TVMVLVM" (honorary tomb). It notes the monument was "A MAIOFIBUS TER FRYSTRA DECRETVM" (decreed three times in vain by the Florentines) and "FELICITER EXCITARVNT" (happily erected) in "ANNO M DCCC XXIX" (the year 1829). Two commemorative plaques are visible on the base. One reads "NEL VII CENTENARIO DELLA NASCITA L'ASSOCIAZIONE 'STVDIVM DANTIS, MCCLXV-MCMLXV" (On the 7th Centenary of the Birth, The 'Studium Dantis' Association, 1265-1965). The other, partially visible, mentions "NEL VI CENTENARIO I NASCITA ASSOCIAZIONE NAZK DEI COMUNI ITALIA MCCLXV-MCML" (On the 6th Centenary of the Birth, National Association of Italian Municipalities, 1265-1950). The monument, conveying solemnity and reverence, celebrates the enduring legacy of the renowned poet.
