This image depicts an active, open-air earth excavation site located in Rayfield, Nigeria
This image depicts an active, open-air earth excavation site located in Rayfield, Nigeria. The landscape is characterized by extensive, irregular pits and mounds of reddish-brown soil, indicating significant manual digging and erosion. Steep, uneven banks and scattered smaller piles of excavated material are visible throughout the foreground and midground. Sparse green shrubs and grasses are present on less disturbed areas, while numerous bare, fallen trees and large branches are integrated within the pits and along their edges, particularly on the left side of the frame. In the background, denser clusters of trees with varying foliage density and a distant building with a dark roof are visible under a clear, bright sky. Approximately 9-10 individuals are distributed across the site, engaged in or observing activity. On the left side of a deep pit, two or more individuals are partially obscured by tree debris and excavated earth. In the central-left pit, two men in dark clothing are observed; one stands near a soil mound, while the other appears to be engaged in digging or sifting near a muddy, water-filled depression. A blue hose extends into this central pit, suggesting the use or drainage of water. On the upper right bank, at least five individuals are standing or observing the activity below. This group includes a person in a red shirt, another in a pink shirt, and a third in a yellow shirt, with others partially obscured by foliage and terrain. The scene indicates an ongoing manual earthmoving or artisanal mining operation.
