The upper 60% of the frame is dominated by a bright blue sky, exhibiting a slight gradient from darker blue at the zenith to lighter blue near the horizon. Below the sky, rugged, dark brown and reddish-brown mountain peaks and ridges extend across the middle and lower portions of the scene. In the midground, a prominent, reddish-brown peak with visible horizontal rock stratification rises steeply on the left, its left flank descending into a deep, shadowed valley. To the right of this peak, a series of lower, rocky ridges and valleys are visible. A distinct layer of white, puffy clouds forms a "sea of clouds" below many of the peaks, stretching horizontally across the distant horizon. Smaller cloud formations are also present within the deeper valleys on the far left. In the lower right midground, a wide, winding dirt or rock trail is visible along a mountain ridge.
