The bronze sculpture "Angels Unawares" by Timothy P

Città del VaticanoVatican City

The bronze sculpture "Angels Unawares" by Timothy P. Schmalz is depicted on the cobblestone pavement of St. Peter's Square, Città del Vaticano, Vatican City. The central subject is a densely packed group of approximately 140 diverse figures, including adults and children, standing within a large, flat-bottomed boat. Many figures carry luggage, and a winged figure is visible rising from the center-rear of the boat's crowd. In the background, tall, fluted, light-colored stone columns of the St. Peter's Square colonnade dominate, with a multi-story building visible through them. A black cylindrical waste bin and a small floral arrangement are present at the sculpture's left bow. To the right, an adult and a child are seated on stone steps. The dark grey cobblestone ground is partially illuminated by natural light from the right, casting a shadow line across the foreground.
