Two handcrafted martenitsa dolls are prominently displayed against the bare branches of a tree in Silistra, Bulgaria

SilistraBulgaria

Two handcrafted martenitsa dolls are prominently displayed against the bare branches of a tree in Silistra, Bulgaria. The female doll, positioned on the left, is constructed primarily from red yarn, featuring a red knitted cap, black braided pigtails, and a white face with bead eyes and a red embroidered smile. A white ribbon adorned with a repetitive red floral motif is draped around her waist and front, complementing her voluminous red yarn skirt. The male doll, on the right, is made from off-white yarn, wearing a black knitted cap with a white snowflake emblem, a white face with similar bead eyes and red smile, and a multi-colored vest with horizontal stripes of red, green, yellow, black, and white. His off-white legs are accented with black criss-cross lacing over white leg wraps. Both dolls are suspended by twisted red and white strings from the tree branches, positioned to appear as if holding hands. Numerous additional red and white martenitsi, including twisted strings and pompoms, decorate the surrounding bare branches, characteristic of early spring traditional celebrations.
