An open, rectangular wooden box containing two sets of sculpted chess pieces is depicted from an overhead perspective, resting on the ground in Eckbolsheim, France
An open, rectangular wooden box containing two sets of sculpted chess pieces is depicted from an overhead perspective, resting on the ground in Eckbolsheim, France. The box's interior is fitted with two compartments, each lined with molded blue velvet and individual recesses. The upper compartment displays 16 silver-toned metal chess pieces, arranged in rows. These pieces represent a complete side of a chess set, featuring eight pawns, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, a king, and a queen, all rendered as human or animal figures, some stylized as historical or ecclesiastical characters. Each silver-toned piece is seated on a circular red felt base. The lower compartment contains 16 gold-toned metal chess pieces, identically styled and arranged as the silver set, also on red felt bases. The ground beneath the box consists of sparse green grass, exposed soil, small pebbles, and scattered dry leaves and plant debris. A section of a textured gray surface, possibly concrete, is visible along the lower edge of the frame.
