This image depicts an ancient marble sarcophagus on display indoors at the Museo Archeologico Provinciale di Salerno, Italy
This image depicts an ancient marble sarcophagus on display indoors at the Museo Archeologico Provinciale di Salerno, Italy. The sarcophagus, roughly 2.5 meters in length, is positioned centrally, resting on a low, reddish-brown brick plinth laid in a stretcher bond pattern. Its lid is gabled, featuring horizontal etched lines. A prominent, deeply carved human head with curly hair, possibly Medusa, projects from the front-right triangular pediment of the lid. The main body of the sarcophagus is extensively adorned with high-relief carvings depicting a crowded, dynamic scene of numerous nude and semi-nude male figures engaged in what appears to be a battle or mythological combat, some wielding weapons, with animal figures, including a lion, also present within the composition. The background consists of a light beige, textured wall. Mounted on this wall above the sarcophagus are several other ancient stone reliefs. Two large, rectangular reliefs are visible centrally, with the one on the right depicting figures holding what appear to be shields or staves. To the far left, a smaller, shield-shaped relief and two small, rectangular stone fragments are affixed to the wall. A rectangular white plaque with Italian text, partially legible on the right, includes the words "QUELLI SALERNO IL LOR L..." and "NORMANNI." The floor is paved with reddish-brown bricks or terracotta tiles laid in a herringbone pattern. A partial view of another peaked stone artifact is visible in the distant left background, behind the sarcophagus. The overall environment is consistent with a museum or archaeological exhibit hall.
