The image displays the Chouara Tannery located within the Fes el Bali medina of Fez, Morocco, observed from an elevated viewpoint. An overcast, light grey sky covers a horizon line of densely packed, multi-story buildings with light brown and ochre facades, characteristic of traditional Moroccan architecture. A single dark green conical tree stands prominently on the far left horizon. The core of the scene is the tannery complex, consisting of hundreds of stone vats. In the lower left and central foreground, approximately forty square and rectangular vats, varying in color from off-white to pale green and light brown, contain liquids and submerged hides.
