A marble sculpture, identified as Bartolomeo Ammannati's "Hercules and Antaeus," is positioned within an arched niche. The sculpture depicts two male figures: an older, heavily muscled, bearded man (Hercules) standing over and grappling with a younger, less muscular man (Antaeus) who kneels beneath him. Hercules is nude, securing Antaeus with his left arm while his right hand grips near Antaeus's head. Antaeus, also nude with some drapery around his lower body, is depicted with an arched back and turned head, in a struggle. The figures are carved from light-colored marble, exhibiting detailed musculature and facial features. The sculpture rests on a multi-tiered, grey stone pedestal. It is illuminated from the upper left, casting a pronounced shadow of both figures against the warm, light brown-toned rear wall of the niche. Above the arch, decorative molding and a frieze with repetitive patterns are visible, along with dark reddish-brown triangular elements in the spandrels. A vertically oriented, ornate decorative panel frames the left side of the niche. This sculpture is located in the Courtyard of Ammannati within the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, Italy.
