An aerial view captures the Chouara Tannery in Fez el-Bali, Fez, Morocco, under a heavily clouded, overcast sky. The scene is dominated by a vast, irregular grid of hundreds of circular, stone-lined vats, ranging in size and filled with liquids of various colors: dark grey, light grey, multiple shades of brown, reddish-brown, and pale beige. These vats are densely packed within a recessed open-air courtyard surrounded by tall, ochre-colored traditional buildings with flat roofs. At least ten workers are visible on the tannery floor, actively engaged among the vats. In the foreground-center, one worker in dark clothing stands knee-deep in a brown-liquid-filled vat, manually manipulating a large, wet, light-colored hide. Other workers are distributed throughout the vat area, attending to similar tasks. Numerous animal hides, light brown or beige, are submerged in vats, draped over the edges of vats, spread on the ground, or hung on ropes and exterior walls of the surrounding buildings for drying. On an elevated, covered terrace of a building in the mid-ground, approximately 15-20 individuals, appearing to be observers, are gathered, looking down at the tannery operations. Further up and to the left, another building shows hides draped over its rooftop structure. The overall environment is a bustling, traditional leather processing site with continuous manual labor.
