This image depicts the sunlit stone facade of Surb Astvatsatsin Church (Holy Mother of God Church) in Areni, Armenia. The structure is composed of light brown to reddish-brown cut stone blocks. At the lower center, a pair of dark brown wooden double doors forms the main entrance. These doors are intricately carved with geometric patterns and large crosses, and they are secured at the handles by a white, rope-like material. Above the doors, within a semicircular arch, a stone tympanum features a relief carving of three figures: a central seated figure holding a child, flanked by two standing figures. Inscriptions are present above these figures. The archway itself is deeply recessed and adorned with multiple layers of relief carvings, including star-like geometric and floral motifs. Directly above the lower entrance, a smaller, similarly arched opening contains a smaller pair of dark wooden doors or shutters. Above these, a less distinct stone tympanum carving shows a central figure flanked by two smaller elements. This upper archway also features detailed relief carvings. Prominent stepped, zig-zagging stone projections and recesses extend horizontally across the facade, creating distinct shadow patterns under the bright daylight. The entire stone surface is extensively covered with additional relief carvings, including geometric designs, crosses, and foliate patterns.
