This image depicts the interior of the central dome and upper walls of the Church of Saint Sava, located in Belgrade, Serbia
This image depicts the interior of the central dome and upper walls of the Church of Saint Sava, located in Belgrade, Serbia. The scene is dominated by intricate, multi-layered mosaic artwork rendered primarily in gold, blue, red, and various earth tones. In the uppermost central dome, a golden mosaic features a circular emblem with a blue cross, surrounded by smaller figures and geometric patterns. Below this, a large, ornate mosaic band depicts various biblical figures and saints, including four evangelists identified by Cyrillic script (e.g., "СВЕТИ МАРКО" - Saint Mark, "СВЕТИ ЈОВАН БОГОСЛОВ" - Saint John the Theologian). They are shown seated, writing or holding scrolls. The primary scene in the main dome depicts the Dormition of the Theotokos (the falling asleep of Mary). The Virgin Mary is shown lying deceased on a bed, surrounded by numerous figures, including apostles, angels, and Christ, who is centrally positioned holding a swaddled infant representing Mary's soul. This central composition is rich in figures and details, all rendered in mosaic. Below this main scene, a series of arched windows with white lattice patterns admit natural light. Between these windows and on the surrounding walls, additional mosaic panels depict rows of standing saints and religious figures. Below the windows, a band of golden mosaic features more figures and Cyrillic text. The lower portion of the image reveals a complex architectural structure with carved stone arches and decorative patterns in beige and light brown, contrasting with the vibrant mosaics above. These arches feature intricate bas-relief designs. A metal chandelier structure is partially visible hanging in the upper left. The perspective is from the floor level, looking directly upwards towards the dome.
