A marble funerary monument is depicted, located in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, Italy. The monument is comprised of three primary vertical sections. The uppermost section features a white marble bust of a male figure, depicted from the chest up, facing forward with a neutral expression. He wears clerical attire, including a collared garment with buttons down the front and a pectoral cross suspended by a chain around his neck. The bust is set within an oval, recessed frame, against a background of dark green marble with distinct veining. This section is flanked by white marble pilasters with ornate capitals and topped by an arched pediment of similar marble, also showing veining. The central section is a rectangular white marble plaque with an incised Latin inscription. The text identifies the subject as "ANTONIVS MARIA TRAVERSI," "PATRIARCHA CONSTANTINOPOL. CANONICVS BASIL. HVIVS," and includes biographical details, concluding with "DECESIT IX KAL. OCT. AN. M.DCCC.XLIII," indicating his death on September 24, 1843, during the pontificate of "GREGORI XVI PONT. MAX." The lowermost section is a rectangular white marble bas-relief panel. It portrays a draped female allegorical figure standing centrally, holding a cross in her raised right hand and a closed book in her left hand. She is flanked by various scientific and astronomical instruments: on the left, a large armillary sphere and another spherical instrument on a stand are prominently featured; on the right, a celestial globe, an open book resting on a stand, and other complex mechanical devices are visible. A crescent moon is depicted in the upper left background of the relief, and a sun in the upper right. The entire monument is framed and set within a larger wall structure composed of various marbles, primarily dark green veined marble and white-grey veined marble for the architectural surrounds.
