In the lower-left foreground, a dense cluster of reedy, grassy vegetation, consisting of both green and dry brown stalks, extends from an unseen bank into the water. The water surface near this vegetation and in the lower-right foreground is dark, unfrozen, and contains submerged detritus. The majority of the water's surface, extending into the midground and background, is covered by a reflective sheet of ice. This ice exhibits a textured appearance, marked by numerous small, entrapped air bubbles and irregular patterns. Several elongated pieces of natural debris, resembling fallen reeds or twigs, are visible frozen into or resting upon the ice and exposed water. Bright sunlight creates strong reflections on the icy surface, particularly in the upper portion of the frame.
