This large, multi-tiered Gothic altarpiece, identified as the Coronation of the Virgin altarpiece by Agnolo Gaddi, is displayed prominently in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, Italy. The artwork features an elaborate gilded architectural framework with pinnacles, pointed arches, and intricate carved detailing. The central and most prominent painted section depicts the Annunciation. On the right, the Virgin Mary, dressed in a blue mantle and red tunic, is seated on a throne, holding an open book on her lap, with a hand to her chest. Rays of golden light emanate from the upper left, leading to a descending white dove above her head. On the left, the Archangel Gabriel, with large golden wings and a white garment, kneels before Mary, holding a staff. To the left of the Annunciation scene, a panel portrays a group of male figures, likely prophets, standing in various colored robes, some holding scrolls. To the right, another panel presents a group of standing male and female figures in similar attire. Above the main painted register, multiple smaller, arched compartments and pinnacles extend upwards. The central pinnacle features a depiction of the Crucifixion. Other pinnacles and smaller arches house individual figures, likely saints or angels. Below the main panels, a horizontal predella consists of several rectangular painted sections. From left to right, these include panels showing robed figures holding books, a central depiction of the Man of Sorrows (the dead Christ supported by surrounding figures), and additional robed figures, some in ecclesiastical vestments. The altarpiece is illuminated by spotlights, casting shadows on the light-colored wall behind it. Below the artwork, display panels with textual information and smaller illustrative images are visible, positioned behind a low barrier, indicating a museum exhibit setting.
