This image captures the Cortile d'Onore (Courtyard of Honor) of the Castello Estense in Ferrara, Italy, under natural light. The scene is dominated by a multi-story brick architectural structure featuring a series of large, rounded brick arches supported by ornate white stone columns. The upper wall consists of light-brown brickwork. Visible on this level are three distinct openings: a dark-framed rectangular window with four panes, a plastered-over and cracked rectangular opening, and another rectangular window partially obscured by a reddish-brown fabric shade. Below these, the main brick façade incorporates a decorative brick archway spanning the width above the loggia. The ground-level portico features three visible arches. Within the leftmost arch, a white, modern-style spiral staircase ascends. Black metal railings line this staircase and a lower balcony. Numerous small, red, umbrella-like or poppy-shaped decorative elements are attached to these railings. The courtyard ground is paved. A central pathway, composed of grey cobblestones (river stones) with flanking white stone borders, extends from the foreground into the midground. The surrounding areas are paved with red bricks. On the brick-paved section to the left, four weathered, rectangular stone pedestals are visible, linearly arranged. Nearby, two large green potted plants and a leafless tree in a terracotta pot are positioned beneath the spiral staircase. In the midground, on the cobblestone path, a pyramid-shaped stack of six dark, spherical objects (consistent with cannonballs) is centrally placed. Two individuals, both dressed in dark clothing, are observed leaning over and closely examining these spheres. A third individual, wearing a lighter jacket and dark pants, stands further back to the right, observing the area. A partial view of a stone wellhead is visible on the far right side of the brick-paved area.
