An exterior, low-angle photograph captures the Puerta del Alcázar (also known as Puerta del Mercado Grande), a prominent gateway in the medieval Walls of Ávila, Spain
An exterior, low-angle photograph captures the Puerta del Alcázar (also known as Puerta del Mercado Grande), a prominent gateway in the medieval Walls of Ávila, Spain. The scene is dominated by massive, weathered stone walls and two flanking round towers, constructed from irregularly shaped grey and reddish-brown granite blocks. Crenellated battlements line the top edges of the walls and towers. A large, high arched opening spans between the upper sections of the towers, framing a pale, overcast sky. Below this large arch, within the central wall section, is a smaller, dark arched entryway. Directly above this lower arch, a carved stone escutcheon or emblem is embedded into the wall. The ground in the immediate foreground is a grey paved plaza. A group of approximately 8-10 individuals, dressed in casual clothing, are visible near and within the lower arched entrance, engaged in movement either entering or exiting the city. To the right of the plaza, two individuals walk away from the gate; one wears a dark coat and carries a light-colored shoulder bag, while the other wears a light green jacket and a backpack. A low black metal fence is partially visible along the left side of the paved area.
