A tall, ornate Baroque funerary monument, primarily composed of white, grey, and dark marble, is depicted within a grand architectural setting, identified as the Monument to Saint Peter of Alcantara by Francesco Baratta (c. 1667) in St. Peter's Basilica, Città del Vaticano, Vatican City.

The monument is set against a backdrop of vertically fluted light grey marble panels exhibiting subtle veining. The uppermost section features a male saint, identified as Saint Peter of Alcantara, sculpted in white marble, standing within a shallow arched niche. He wears a simple monastic habit with a rope cincture and a crucifix rosary, holding a rough-hewn wooden cross over his left shoulder. His right arm is extended outwards, palm open, in a gesture of address or welcome. To his lower left, a seated winged female angel, also in white marble, gazes upwards towards the saint. Directly below the saint's niche, on the right side of the monument's mid-section, a white marble human skull draped with a chain and fabric serves as a memento mori.

Below this, a dark rectangular marble plaque with white Latin inscription reads "BASES PILARVM EX LAPIDE TIBVRTINO MARMOREAE IN PONTIFICATVS AN. XIII", referring to the marble bases of columns from Tivoli and the 13th year of a pontificate. The lowest section of the monument features two playful, winged putti (cherubs) sculpted in white marble. They interact with an elaborate, gilded, shell-like or volute-decorated cartouche, which is partially covered by a flowing dark marble drapery. The putto on the left supports the gilded element with both hands, while the putto on the right supports it with his left arm, his legs trailing down. The entire monument rests on a multi-tiered base of polished light grey marble, exhibiting horizontal moldings. The foreground shows a patterned marble floor composed of alternating light and dark squares. A reddish-brown marble wall with lighter veining is partially visible on the far left.
