A sculpture depicting a Kasa-obake, a Japanese yokai, is suspended from a ceiling in Kyoto, Japan

KyotoJapan

A sculpture depicting a Kasa-obake, a Japanese yokai, is suspended from a ceiling in Kyoto, Japan. The central component is an open, traditional Japanese umbrella (wagasa) with alternating light brown and black segments. An oversized, realistic prosthetic eyeball with a golden iris and dark pupil is affixed to the apex of the umbrella. Emerging from the lower rim of the umbrella is a pale-skinned, anatomically detailed human-like leg. The foot, with clearly defined toes, wears a red thong-style sandal. This sandal rests upon a small, light-colored wooden block, secured with a visible string or cord. The installation is viewed from a low angle against a yellow ceiling, likely an awning or painted surface. In the background, white utility pipes, electrical wiring, fluorescent light fixtures, and a black spotlight are visible. A partial sign displaying "Bob" and an upward arrow is present in the lower left of the frame.
