The diagram illustrates the digestive process. Starting in the mouth, starch, lactose, and sucrose are acted upon by salivary α-amylase. In the stomach, sucrose and lactose continue digestion. Pancreatic secretions containing α-amylase and HCO₃⁻ further break down α-dextrins in the small intestine. Tri- and oligosaccharides, maltose, and isomaltose are then processed into glucose, fructose, and galactose, which are absorbed. Undigested fiber passes to the colon, where it is eliminated as feces.
