A long, rectangular mosaic mural is affixed to a wall within a pedestrian underpass on Begovaya Street in Rostov-on-Don, Russia
A long, rectangular mosaic mural is affixed to a wall within a pedestrian underpass on Begovaya Street in Rostov-on-Don, Russia. The mural depicts a historical scene featuring multiple figures, ships, and fortifications against a light blue sky and a body of water. On the left side of the mural, a prominent group of seven men stands on a beige landmass. The central figure, positioned slightly forward, wears a blue long coat with gold trim, white knee breeches, black boots, and a blue tricorn hat. He has long, light brown hair. This figure resembles historical depictions of Peter the Great. Six accompanying men wear similar 18th-century attire, primarily red or brown coats, white shirts, and long hair. Further to the left and in the background, a line of additional soldiers in blue and white uniforms is partially visible. In the middle ground, a body of water, likely a sea or river, separates the landmasses. Several sailing ships with masts are visible on the water, varying in size. On the right side of the mural, another landmass features a group of four men in teal-green coats, white breeches, and tricorn hats. Two of these men are actively engaged with a black cannon mounted on two wheels; one leans over the cannon with a tool, while another kneels behind it. A third man stands holding a long, dark, rectangular-ended pole. A fourth man observes to their left. In the background on the right, a smaller cluster of men in red coats is visible near the water, interacting with smaller vessels. The foreground of the image shows the underpass floor, a textured surface composed of mottled green and reddish-brown terrazzo or concrete. The concrete ceiling above the mural exhibits visible water stains and minor material degradation. The mosaic itself appears to be constructed from small, multi-colored tiles, forming a detailed historical narrative.
