The scene is set outdoors in Kasansay, Uzbekistan, during what appears to be a cold period, indicated by snow cover. Five dark-feathered fowl, consistent with chickens or gamefowl, are present on uneven ground. Four of these fowl are clustered on a patch of dark brown, exposed earth in the mid-ground, actively consuming feed from a light-brown, rectangular block of compressed grains. Their heads are lowered towards the feed. A fifth fowl stands slightly apart to the right of the feeding group, facing towards the right side of the frame. The ground immediately to the right and in the background is partially covered in snow interspersed with dark soil and sparse vegetation. A thin, bare tree branch or sapling is visible in the upper right background. A piece of light brown cardboard debris is partially visible on the far left edge of the exposed soil.
