The image depicts the intricately decorated upper facade of a portal at St. Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco) in Venice, Italy.

The scene is dominated by a large, arched mosaic composed of numerous tesserae, primarily golden, with figures rendered in various colors including blue, green, red, brown, and white. At the top center of the mosaic, within an arch, a figure identified as Christ Pantocrator is visible, holding a book, flanked by two domes topped with crosses. Below this, the mosaic displays multiple registers of figures arranged within architectural frames, including clergy holding crosiers, and groups of individuals dressed in historical robes and headwear, engaged in various interactions, suggesting narrative scenes. An arc-shaped Latin inscription, "OIGNIS PERS LAUDOIBUS ET HYMNS UT VENETOS SEMPER SERVET AB HOSTE" (meaning "Every person with praise and hymns, that he may always save the Venetians from the enemy"), runs along the upper edge of the mosaic on a golden band.

Below the mosaic, a large archway features elaborate carvings in light-colored stone, accented with gilded elements. The carvings include intertwined foliage and human figures in relief on the spandrels of the arch. Directly beneath the mosaic and above the lower arch, a section clad in greenish-gray mottled marble presents further carvings. This area includes a central rectangular relief depicting a winged figure riding a horse. Flanking and below this central piece are four circular medallions in relief, portraying the symbols of the four Evangelists: a winged lion, a winged ox, a winged man (angel), and an eagle. Beneath these medallions are three rectangular grilles with distinct geometric patterns.

The lowest visible section of the facade features a continuous horizontal frieze in light-colored stone, depicting numerous small human figures in bas-relief within architectural settings, illustrating various narrative scenes. This frieze is situated above panels of grey and white veined marble. Flanking the main archway are large, polished columns of light-colored, veined marble, topped with intricately carved capitals.
