The image depicts a Wheel of Life, a traditional Buddhist artwork
The image depicts a Wheel of Life, a traditional Buddhist artwork. The location is Oshojetban, Nepal. The wheel is divided into segments, each illustrating a different aspect of existence and karmic cycles. In the center of the wheel, a rooster, snake, and pig are shown, representing greed, hatred, and ignorance, respectively. These drive the cycle of suffering. Surrounding the center is a ring with light and dark halves. The light half depicts figures moving upwards, representing positive actions and rebirth in higher realms. The dark half shows figures being dragged down, representing negative actions and rebirth in lower realms. Around this ring are six realms of existence: gods, demigods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and hells. Each realm illustrates the conditions and experiences common to those born there. Finally, the outer ring depicts the 12 links of dependent origination, which illustrate the chain of cause and effect that perpetuates suffering. These include ignorance, karma formations, consciousness, name and form, the six sense organs, contact, feeling, craving, grasping, becoming, birth, and aging and death. Various Buddhas and deities are also represented, offering guidance and hope for liberation from the cycle of suffering. The painting exhibits a variety of figures engaged in different activities within their respective realms. A landscape including mountains, trees, and structures is visible in the background.
