An oil painting, titled "The Crucifixion with the Virgin, Saint John the Evangelist, and Mary Magdalene" by Andrea Mantegna, is prominently displayed on a light grey wall within the Museum of Fine Arts (Szépművészeti Múzeum) in Budapest, Hungary. The painting depicts Jesus Christ centrally crucified on a rough wooden cross, wearing a white loincloth and a crown of thorns, with a gold halo emanating from his head. An "I.N.R.I." placard is affixed to the cross above his head. Below him, three sorrowful figures are positioned on a stylized, sandy ground. To the viewer's left, the Virgin Mary stands in blue and purple robes, looking up at Christ with a solemn expression, also with a halo. To the viewer's right, Saint John the Evangelist, cloaked in a prominent red robe, stands gazing upwards, adorned with a halo. At the base of the cross, Mary Magdalene kneels, clad in a blue top and red skirt, embracing the lower part of the cross with both arms, her face upturned in distress, also bearing a halo. A human skull rests on the ground to the right of Magdalene. The background of the scene is a dark, textured teal or blue. The artwork is enclosed within a thick, ornate, gold-colored wooden frame and is suspended by two thin, almost invisible wires from the ceiling. A distinct shadow is cast by the painting onto the wall to its left. Below the painting, a dark brown wooden dado rail or wall paneling extends horizontally across the lower portion of the image. To the right of the painting, a black rectangular information panel with white text is visible, partially obscured, indicating details about the artwork in multiple languages including English and Spanish.
