The image shows the Madara Rider rock relief, a large early medieval rock relief carved on the Madara Plateau near the village of Madara in Bulgaria. The relief depicts a horseman, approximately 23 meters above the ground on a nearly vertical 100-meter-high cliff. The rider is thrusting a spear into a lion lying at his horse's feet. A dog is running behind the horseman. The relief is carved into a light-colored sandstone rock face, which is marked by several horizontal fractures and variations in texture and coloration. Vegetation is visible at the base of the cliff and along the edges. A modern path or trail runs along the base. There are some visible holes and metal objects (possibly remnants of climbing equipment) on the cliff face.
