The image depicts the expansive, tiled courtyard of the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University in Fez el-Bali, Fez, Morocco, under an overcast sky. The ground is paved with a dense checkerboard pattern of square tiles in shades of green, white, gray, and beige, appearing damp or wet from recent precipitation. In the mid-ground on the left, a tall, slender white minaret with a square base, two small arched windows, and an ornate finial dominates the skyline. Below it, a dark-wood ablution fountain with a green-tiled domed roof and white marble base is centrally positioned. A group of approximately five to six adult males is standing near this fountain, some appearing to be in motion. Further into the left background, parts of buildings with green-tiled roofs and white walls are visible. To the right and extending across the far end of the courtyard, a long white building features a series of intricately carved arched walkways, or arcades. These arches are supported by pillars and adorned with detailed stucco work, and several ornate lanterns hang from their ceilings. The roof of this structure is also covered with green tiles. Along the base of these arcades, approximately eight to ten individuals are seated or lying on the ground, seemingly resting. In the far distance, another smaller, lighter-colored minaret rises above the architectural complex. In the foreground, slightly left of center, a rectangular grate or open trapdoor is visible on the tiled courtyard floor. The overall scene is one of a functional religious and educational space, sparsely populated during what appears to be a cool, overcast day.
