The image displays a close-up, angled perspective of a traditional tiled roof in Deià, Spain
The image displays a close-up, angled perspective of a traditional tiled roof in Deià, Spain. The roof is constructed from numerous terracotta barrel tiles, also known as mission tiles or imbrices and tegulae, laid in alternating rows. Each row consists of convex tiles (tegulae) forming channels, covered by concave tiles (imbrices) laid upside down, creating a pattern of overlapping half-cylinders. The tiles exhibit various states of weathering and discoloration, ranging from reddish-brown and light tan to areas heavily stained with dark gray or black biological growth and mineral deposits. Some tiles are chipped, cracked, or appear broken, revealing a lighter, grayish-white mortar or concrete substrate beneath. Small pieces of debris and plant matter are visible between some tiles and in crevices. The overall appearance suggests an aged, sun-exposed, and well-used architectural surface. No people or active interactions are present in the frame.
