SarajevoBosnia and Herzegovina

This image depicts a segment of an urban building facade and sidewalk in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, specifically at the site commemorating the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The scene is dominated by a weathered, light-grey stone wall, composed of irregular, rough-hewn blocks. Centrally embedded in the wall, at approximately eye-level, is a smooth, rectangular stone plaque. The plaque features engraved text in two languages: the top portion in Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian (Serbo-Croatian script) and the bottom portion in English. The English inscription reads: "FROM THIS PLACE ON 28 JUNE 1914 GAVRILO PRINCIP ASSASSINATED THE HEIR TO THE AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN THRONE FRANZ FERDINAND AND HIS WIFE SOFIA." Flanking the plaque are dark-framed, recessed openings, resembling windows or display cases. The left frame contains a partial, faded black-and-white image showing the lower legs and dark, laced boots of a person, cut off at the knees. The right frame shows a bright, obscured, and possibly damaged white surface. The ground consists of a grey, square-tiled sidewalk extending from the base of the wall. Directly in front of the plaque, a dark, rectangular metal or concrete plate is embedded into the pavement. This plate contains two distinct, shallow, relief impressions of shoe soles, oriented to face the wall. The left footprint contains minor debris, possibly small leaves or dirt particles. The surrounding pavement shows signs of wear and minor discoloration.
