This image depicts a dimly lit chapel or altar alcove, enclosed by a tall, dark, ornate iron gate, located within the Cathedral of Cuenca (Catedral de Santa María y San Julián de Cuenca) in Cuenca, Spain. The gate, featuring vertical bars with decorative twists and an arched top with radiating spikes, is partially open on its right side, revealing the interior. At the center of the alcove is an elaborate, multi-tiered golden altarpiece. Its focal point is a large oil painting depicting a shirtless Christ bound to a column, draped with a white cloth around his lower body, while an older, bearded man in a yellow robe, likely Saint Peter, kneels before him with clasped hands, looking upwards. This painting is framed by two golden, spiral-fluted columns. Above the main painting, the altarpiece continues with smaller architectural elements, including a central blue panel bearing a white "M" and a crown, flanked by additional golden columns and smaller painted figures. Below the main painting rests a pedestal constructed of reddish-brown veined marble. On this pedestal, a smaller, framed portrait-style artwork is displayed on a miniature wooden easel. An inscription, partially visible as "NON HAE IN COLUMNA," is located on the golden frieze beneath the main painting. The floor of the enclosed space is a light-colored stone. To the right of the iron gate, a plain white wall with a thin yellow trim line is visible. A small, rectangular, reddish-pink sign bearing the white number "28" is affixed to this wall. Further to the right, a segment of a highly ornate, gilded architectural element with dark, possibly painted or carved, organic motifs resembling grapevines is present, suggesting an adjacent altar or decorative pillar within the larger cathedral structure. Shadows from the iron gate are cast across the floor and the marble pedestal, including a distinct violin-like shadow. No live individuals are present in the scene.
