Stake attention in this memory
The image shows a framed information card about the Birch Fountain, located at the southern end of Belfield Street. The fountain was erected by the Ipoh Chinese business community in memory of E W Birch. During the Japanese occupation (1941-45), the fountain became a site where the Japanese placed the severed heads of punished Chinese. By 1957, it was used for drying laundry and food, leading to the erection of a prohibiting sign by the Town Council. The text notes that the fountain has been replaced by one of a lesser quality and style. A black and white photograph of the fountain is displayed at the bottom of the card.
